Ellen DeGeneres plans to wed longtime girlfriend Portia de Rossi, she announced during a taping of her show Thursday.

In the episode, airing Friday (the news was first reported by TMZ), DeGeneres revealed the big news and told the crowd, “I’m very excited.” The announcement immediately followed the news that California’s Supreme Court struck down a law banning gay marriage.

De Rossi, 35, was reportedly in the studio when DeGeneres – who just celebrated her 50th birthday – broke the news.

In what’s sure to be a controversial decision, the California’s Supreme Court ruled that people have a fundamental “right to marry” the partner of their choosing – therefore the previous ban on gay marriage was ruled unconstitutional.

The two stars began dating in December 2004, as de Rossi was appearing on the FOX sitcom Arrested Development.

One key to their happiness, DeGeneres said last year, is that they learn from one another. “She’s taught me lessons about myself, and I feel like I’ve taught her,” said the TV host. “We’ve both changed and grown, and we just feel like, ‘Oh, okay, this is completion.’ “

I’m really feeling for Ellen right now. She is battling issues with a pet rescue agency after giving away a little dog, named Iggy, to her hairdresser because it wasn’t adjusting well with her cats. Ellen made a plea on her show saying she was serious about getting the pup trained to live in peace in her home but it just didnt work out. She then did what she thought would be best for the dog and gave it to her hairdresser who has two small children. Here is what she said to her audience:

“I guess I signed a piece of paper that says if I can’t keep Iggy, it goes back to the rescue organization, which is not someone’s home, which is not a family. I thought I did a good thing. I tried to find a loving home for the dog because I couldn’t keep it.”

“Because I did it wrong, those people went and took that dog out of their home, and took it away from those kids. I feel totally responsible for it and I’m so sorry. I’m begging them to give that dog back to that family,” She said. “It’s not their fault. It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have given the dog away. Just please give the dog back to those little girls.”

Now, I unfortunately have never owned a dog myself, but I know how attached kids become to pets. So, I really hope Iggy ends up back with that family for those kids sake. You’d think Ellen’s hairdresser could just go apply for adoption for the pup like Ellen did. However, the company, Mutts and Moms, has an unlisted phone number and apparently isn’t returning any e-mails. In most cases I take the side of the law because I get tired of seeing celebrities rise above it, but I will have to side with the celebrity on this one.

Yay! The Sopranos won. That was totally my favorite show. I sort of wanted The Sopranos to totally sweep the Emmy’s because they won’t get the chance to anymore. But at least they won a couple awards. (Edit: I only posted the fun awards.. none of the technical awards or the directing type of awards. Sorry!) Check out the celebrity pictures below.
